EXCLUSIVE: Freddie Smith Leaving 'Days of Our Lives' as Sonny Kiriakis

Freddie Smith's 'Days' are done.
Actor Freddie Smith is leaving his role as Sonny Kiriakis on Days of our Lives. He stopped filming the daytime soap two weeks ago.

Serial Scoop reached out to NBC for a comment but the network and Days of Our lives have yet to comment on Smith's departure.

Days of our Lives has been filming episodes five months in advance so Smith will air as Sonny through much of the summer.

Would you accept a recast for the character of Sonny? What does this mean for Will (Guy Wilson) and Sonny's marriage? Will hasn’t been playing with a full deck for some time now, and this news may just send the young adulterer over the edge.

Stay tuned!

UPDATE:
Freddie Smith's last airdate as Sonny (for now) is scheduled for August 18.

Could this be tied to Wally Kurth being back on contract at DAYS?

It's probably tied to Freddie's DUI conviction. They should recast, but since they have some time they should try really hard to get someone good, unlike the Will recast!

Maybe doing jail time for the accident ???????

I hope they recast. Sonny has become a really important character and I would hate to see his story end.

Unknown said...

Do you think they would kill Sonny off? That sounds like a dark story heading into the 50th anniversary, but it would give Justin & Adrienne meaty material to play.

Michael Goldberg said...

Oh God no! Don't kill Sonny. It was bad enough that Jack was killed off. Now we are going to kill off the character that was named after Jack? :) I say recast with Chandler Massey!

So sad. Now that this storyline has become so exciting again with Sonny and Paul. They have been generating the most buzz for Days over the last couple of months.
Hundreds of thousands of fans will stop watching if they don't give us a DAMN good recast of Sonny (and Will who has become almost unwatchable since Chandler Massey left the show) and keep them and Paul in front burner storylines!

He's not doing jail time. Sheesh.

Anyway, best wishes to Freddie and I hope they recast the role. Sonny is important to Salem.

I get the feeling that it's because of bad press due to his DUI.

I heard his contract was up around this time so it makes sense. I was hoping he wouldnt leave but sadly seems so. I would like a recast tho I guess it depends on what happens during these next few months.

Come on. Do you really think, because he got a DUI, that he would be let go??
If he leaves, it's to better himself. He's a great actor..

Unknown said...

It has NOTHING to do with his dui. He got a yr loss of license, and speeches to the high schools in that county and a fine. All of which dont affect his work.

Will was unwatchable while Chandler Massey cried & smirked his way through his scenes. Guy Wilson made him tolerable.

Per Jason47's Days' site, Smith's contract is up April 2015, so rather than anything having to do with his legal issues, it's more than likely just centered around that.

I'd have no problem with a recast, I actually already have two actors in mind to play NuSonny. And don't get me wrong, I love FS. It's just that the character is the main thing. As in many cases, though, they should 'rest" the character for awhile prior to any changeover.

Sadly, though, in this case, the decision to hire someone to play the role after September might come down to whether the entire show itself is going to be renewed.

He was on set filming yesterday, so how about waiting for official confirmation?

The Guy haters are unbelievable!! It is like we are watching different shows. Guy is great and there's a big group of people like me (though not as loud as the haters) who adore him...
The topic is Freddie's leaving... this makes me sad mainly because the rapport between Guy and Freddie is so genuine. I wish him the best and thank you for bringing to life Sonny. As to a recast, only NBC can decide on that...

Man this truly sucks, Days has already lost so many great actors lately and the Sonny/Paul/Will story is the best thing on Days and all of daytime right now. I hope the show takes it's time finding a perfect recast and not a bad rush recast like with Guy Wilson. I'm bummed since HBO cancelled Looking and now this. Sucks.

Anonymous said...

Right. That's why we're reading tens of thousands of comments on Days's Facebook page saying they want Chandler back and what a total failure the recast was. Oh, and then those three Emmys in a row...It's pretty obvious who knows something about acting here and who doesn't.

He didn't get jail time. He got 2 years probation and community service.

I can't see anyone else playing Sonny. But,if they want the Wilson fans to still watch they'll recast them.

I imagine they will recast it.. If Will stays in Salem They will have to either re-cast Sonny or bring in a new love interest. Paul is not suitable, While he has no blood ties to Will, Once its discovered Paul is John's son.. It would be almost incest for them to be together.. As much as if Brady had dated or slept with Sami.. Just too weird. I know they already crossed that line with Will/Paul, but it should not be revisited.
Im not a big fan of G.W's version of Will myself... I find him far too boyish and whiny. So they can recast both as far as Im concerned, Or maybe they can both Ride off and take a trip and Sonny show his husband the world. And return the Final shows or the 50th Anniversary show with 1 or 2 recasts.

I SAY REBOOT OF SONNY AND WILL COMPLETELY NEW ACTORS THAT HAVE CHEMISTRY TOGETHER. FREDDIE DOES WONDERFUL JOB... GUY HIS ACTING IS TOO FORCED .

Anonymous said...

How about casting Luke MacFarlane?

Unknown said...

I really liked Freddie Smith's character!!! Please, Guy is horrible! Not a hater, just being honest. He never showed any emotion, a smirk or tear would be something!! Totally unbelievable. So many great cast members gone. Just feeling sad at all the changes.

I agree with Michael don't kill Sonny off. They should recast the part of Sonny. Although, NBC is going to have to fill pretty big shoes that Freddie left behind because he is such an amazing actor. The Sonny and Will storyline that Days of our lives had added something unique to the soap opera. The love between his character Sonny and Guy's character Will was genuine that it was as if they were a real life couple. It is going to be hard to find someone who can create that kind of chemistry on set. It is a major disappointment to find out that Freddie is no longer going to be on Days because he was my absolute favorite character and his character Sonny is what kept me tuning in everyday to watch it. Freddie, you are a true inspiration to a lot of people keep up the good work. You have wonderful acting skills and are destined for great things. So, good luck in your future endeavors and God Bless!!!

It's a shame he's leaving but I'm baffled that Days or Freddie haven't made an official announcement by now.

I truly hope they recast Sonny I love him, and I hope they keep Paul I want them together.

FoxCrane said...

Sony's standard line is that they don't comment on contracts, so if he's still technically under contract during part of this month, then I may not expect anything from TPTB until after the actual end-date (or unless FS were to say something himself first). - jmho

Maybe the show asked Freddie to wait before making a public announcement that he's leaving. Also even though Freddie has wrapped taping his contract may not end for a few more weeks.Plus just because Freddie has left now i'm wondering if he might come back when the show tapes the 50th anniversary episodes. So Freddie may no longer be on contract with Days but maybe on recurring status. That way he's not contractually tied to the show and free to do other stuff.

Jake Silbermann as nuSonny!

I hope they do not recast Sonny! Freddie Smith is one of the best actors playing one of the best characters Days has right now. No one is going to be able to replace him. I would have been so much happier to hear that Will was leaving and maybe Sonny and Paul could be together. As for new Will, I've never been a fan of him. I actually believed that the old Will and Sonny were truly in love, but I don't find new Will and Sonny believable at all. It is interesting tho that since Will was recast he's a much shittier person. Old Will wouldn't pull any of the stuff he does. He's much easier to dislike for it. That's how I feel about Chad too. But the new Chad has definitely been growing on me. Maybe Sonny will just want to go away again when he learns that Paul is John's son. Maybe he'll go back to Arizona and stay at Xander's since it looks like he may be staying in Salem for awhile. Ooo maybe Paul will go with him and they can be together!

I wonder if his departure has anything to do with February's alcohol related car accident?

Montira Warran said...

I can only guess that it is a possibility. I understand that he was sentenced to community service, and that it must be completed in Ohio (his home state and the location of his accident). I trust you know that, while his sentencing was held in February, his actual accident occurred in October 2014.

Montira Warran said...

He is not getting jail time as long as he fulfills the terms of his sentencing, which include: 1. not driving for a year (they revoked his license); and 2. 1,000 hours of community service, which involves speaking to schools in his home state of Ohio about the dangers of drunk driving.

raul5050 said...

Don't think it has anything to do with his community service. The court and his lawyer wouldn't have created an arrangement that would cost him his job.

He has a pretty profitable business going and he's about to get married all big life changers.

I remember before he signed his last contract he said he was thinking about one more year and the was a year or two ago.

Time to move on and I wish him all the happiness and success he seeks.

I was hoping Alison Sweeney would win an Emmy for her performance of Sami
on Dool. Moira has done a great job as Ava. I loved the romance between Sami & Ej and wished they were still on Days.

Nasmir Fellows said...

He had a drunk driving charge in Ohio, (got into an accident with his girlfriend in car) which was recently settled with him getting probation. I don't know if this influenced his and/or Days decision for him to leave.

Tabetha Robinson Kelsey said...

I actually wasn't even considering the date of occurrence. We all know that Days tapes approximately 6 months in advance..his sentencing in February and last air date in September seem to coincide fairly well. That's what made me wonder, that's all.

I think Sonny should divorce Will for cheating and marry Paul. I'm still not adjusting to the Chad character, he's not easy on the eye

LittleMo said...

Freddie signed to a 4-year deal in 2011 and this was the end of that one - his first and only.

LittleMo said...

If you think Guy Wilson is a good Will after the magnificent job done by Chandler Massey the cheese is slipping off of your cracker. And there is no "big group of people" - in fact a very small group of people just trying to be loud. Guy is a likable young man but a terrible actor and is not and never will be Will. As for Sonny, a re-cast is fine. The couple was done when they let Chandler get away - and that was a voluntary leaving, either.

raul5050 said...

Agreed. There is no groundswell of haters. I think Guy has gotten better over the last few months and as long as he doesn't have to play emotional scenes he's fine.

Sean Christopher is a magnificent actor and it would have been great to have found someone with his sort of chops.

With Freddie leaving, I hope they find a Sonny who is a solid actor and someone, unlike Freddie these last few months, who's really up for the opportunity and some really kissing!

JAP said...

I realize I'm behind on the times...Honestly, if you think the rapport with Guy and Freddie is "so genuine", you must be watching a different show. While Chandler was green at acting, he at least made you feel some emotions. Guy is emotionless, can barely get his lines out and is not convincing as a gay man (I hope he's not really gay because that's even worse). However, I do not feel as though Chandler would have been able to be "Sami like" these past few months. They really have made his character very similar. Not liking Guy (in general) is probably why he pulls it off. In my opinion (only), Freddie Smith is one of the best actors on DOOL. VERY sad to see him go. Hoping that they can land another gem like him.
