'Philly' Fans Get What They Want On 'The Young and the Restless'

'Philly' Fans Get What They Want On 'The Young and the Restless'
By Mark Harding

While critical and fan reception of new Y&R headwriter Sally Sussman has been generally positive, some fan groups have had concerns.

Perhaps most vociferous were fans of the erstwhile Phyllis/Billy union, who felt their couple was being tossed aside without regard for fans’ investment in the pairing. An early interview between Sussman and TV Guide’s Michael Logan fueled these concerns.

The January 9, 2017 episode of Y&R should put those fears to rest. Billy and Phyllis had an encounter at Crimson Lights. Billy bought Phyllis “1,000 calories” (to quote her), and they both talked about moving on. But the chemistry between them was still palpable.

What Brings Reed Back To Genoa City on 'The Young and the Restless'

Serial Scoop recently reported that Tristan Lake Leabu had been cast in the role of Reed Helmstrom, Victoria's (Amelia Heinle) now teenage son.

When the casting call went out for the character, Reed was described as a good-natured, willful and sensitive teen, who takes solace in playing his guitar. Now, thanks to an audition for the character released on vimeo, we have a better idea of what makes Reed tick.

Reed has run away from Washington DC to Genoa City, because his father JT (Thad Luckinbill) is planning on moving to Warsaw. Reed wants to live in GC, but Victoria reminds him that JT has custody. Reed wants to get to know his brother and sister and stay put.

Victoria understands where her son is coming from, but his running away was reckless and thoughtless. Reed wonders if that is who he is now, and maybe she doesn't know him anymore. Reed runs off.

Later, after Reed apologizes to his mother, she agrees to talk to JT about allowing their son to stay in town.

In another scene, Reed visits Victoria at work, and she asks how school was. She is surprised to learn that he isn't into baseball anymore, but Reed does show excitement when talking about a guitar he wants to buy.

You can watch actor Blaine Kern audition for the role below.

Tristan Lake Leabu has joined the cast of CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless. He will play the now teenage son of Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle) and JT Hellstrom (Thad Luckinbill), Reed Hellstrom.

In early November, The Young and the Restless put out a casting call for the role of Wes. The character was described as a good-natured, willful and sensitive teen, who takes solace in playing his guitar. Many assumed at that time this was a recast for Reed.

'The Young and the Restless' Got the Brass Ring with Jason Thompson

The Young and the Restless Got the Brass Ring with Jason Thompson
By Carolyn LeVine Topol
Jason Thompson
Having watched Jason Thompson in the role of Dr. Patrick Drake on ABC’s General Hospital for several years, it was satisfying to see Patrick, Robin, and Emma (played by Kimberly McCullough and Brooklyn Rae Silzer) ride off to a happily-ever-after together to complete their story arc.

Although the departure was bittersweet, knowing these three would no longer be in Port Charles, the farewell was tempered with good news for all the Jason Thompson fans. I, for one, was thrilled to learn he was about to take a giant step into a front-burner storyline on CBS’s The Young and the Restless.

Bravo to The Young and the Restless team for having the foresight to cast Jason Thompson as Billy Abbott. From the moment he appeared as hospitalized, comatose Billy, JT owned the character. In a series of scenes where Billy observes each member of his family preparing to mourn his imminent death, Jason seamlessly made us forget he had not played Billy from the character’s inception.

Jason Thompson and Amelia Heinle as Billy and Victoria on The Young and the Restless

The familial chemistry between Jason and the Abbott family, including Billy’s young children, was instant — the recast was seamless. Even more apparent was the instant chemistry between Jason Thompson and Amelia Heinle, who plays Victoria Newman, Billy Abbott’s fiancĂ©e. Jason’s entry into the role of Billy, appears to have brought about a renewed energy and brightness in all the scenes between these two on-screen lovers.

Recasts are an ongoing, accepted practice on all soap operas. They are a natural part of the genre. Some recasts work and some do not. In this case, the recast of Billy Abbott, with actor Jason Thompson, was the perfect match of actor and role. Without missing a beat, Jason took ownership of the character as if he had been portraying Billy for years — let’s hope he does!
