Nelson Aspen Thrills Packed House with His "Showbiz Scrapbook"

On October 4, I arrived at The Green Room 42 for international entertainment reporter and entertainer Nelson Aspen's sold out debut performance of "A Showbiz Scrapbook." Having seen Nelson multiple times in recent years, I knew he always packed the house so there was no excuse for not buying a ticket before they were all gone but I somehow still managed to end up on the wait list. After being rejected by the ticket booth a few times I made one last attempt to beg my way into the show and secured a bar stool by the door. Lucky for me there are no bad seats in this terrific venue, which I had never visited before. As for the premiere of Nelson's latest show, it was everything I had hoped for and more.

One big new addition for "Showbiz Scrapbook" was the use of audio-visual clips and images to highlight Nelson's prolific television work. During the course of the evening, Nelson recounted everything from how being Princess Diana's fitness trainer launched his broadcasting career to the thousands of celebrity interviews, breaking news stories and red carpet events that led to him becoming known as "Hollywood's Happiest Personality."

The clips featured celebrities such as Betty White, Hugh Jackman, Julie Andrews, Camilla Cabello, Roger Moore (Nelson's favorite James Bond), Carol Lynley and many, many more. The crowd—which featured former daytimers Denise Pence (Guiding Light), Emmy winner Louise Shaffer (Ryan's Hope), Shelly Burch (One Life to Live), producer Richard Schilling, publicist Lee Fryd, Emmy-winning writer Janet Iacobuzio, Marie Brossard and Randy Lein—loved every moment.

The evening also featured the first-ever live performance of Emmy and Murrow award winning journalist Phil Lipof, who killed with his performance of Bruce Springsteen's "Thunder Road."

But since my favorite television show of all-time was the daytime soap opera Another World, I was over the moon when Nelson sang the show's beloved theme song. Check out the iconic chorus below.

Don't Miss Sebastian La Cause in 'The Unauthorized Musical Parody of The Devil Wears Prada'

Sebastian La Cause is nominated for an Indie Series Award for the fourth year in a row.  He's currently starring on stage in "The Unauthorized Musical Parody of The Devil Wears Prada."
“Gird Your Loins!” The Boss from Hell is back as Rockwell Table & Stage presents "The Unauthorized Musical Parody of The Devil Wears Prada," running through the end of April.  While you’re out getting the boss’s coffee and dry cleaning and get your tickets on sale now.

Hot on the heels of its wildly successful Unauthorized Musical Parodies of Scream, Cruel Intentions, Clueless and Home Alone, Rockwell weaves in its signature brand of campiness and musical zaniness to the hit 2006 movie about the boss everyone loves to hate.   Kelley Jakle and Lana McKissack alternately portray Andy, the fresh-faced assistant who must endure her employer’s wrath in the fast paced world of high fashion.   This all-new, live parody production was co-adapted by Ray Wetmore and directed by Tye Blue.

In addition to its seam-splitting hijinks and hilarious musical score, Rockwell pushes things over the top once again. Actors Drew Droege (Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse) and John Flynn (Upright Citizen’s Brigade) alternately play the maniacal role of Miranda Priestly, the devilishly demanding and narcissistic editor-in-chief of fashion bible Runway Magazine.

“Everyone can relate to how crazy it can be to work for the boss from hell,” said Executive Producer and Co-Adapter Kate Pazakis.  “Our Unauthorized Musical Parody of The Devil Wears Prada dials the craziness up a notch, leaving you laughing down the catwalk.

Rounding out the cast is multiple Indie Series Award winner Sebastian La Cause (Orange Is The New Black, Homeland) as Christian Thompson, the charming and sexy writer that seduces Andy during Paris Fashion Week.

"This is what LA theater is all about for me, these small unique experiences that surround the audience and immerse them in a fun world," La Cause revealed to Serial Scoop. "I'm having a blast doing this show and working with such talented people. Don't miss it!"

La Cause only appears in the Friday and Saturday shows. If you're in Los Angeles next week for the 7th Annual Indie Series Awards, this would be a great event to add to your calendar.

Tickets are on sale now for Thursday-Saturday night shows and Sunday brunch matinees through late April. Rockwell: Table & Stage is located in Los Feliz at 1714 N. Vermont Ave, Los Angeles.

Best-Selling Author Mara Purl Steps Back on Stage to Honor Her Father’s 100th Birthday

Best-selling author and noted actress Mara Purl brings the haunting beauty, romance and danger of the sea to The Mezzanine stage on February 26, 27, 28 and March1 in the award-winning play, "Sea Marks". Purl, who played Darla Cook soap Days of our Lives in 1986, co-stars with Christopher Law in this entertaining and compelling two-character theatrical tour-de-force, directed by Colorado Springs’ grande dame of theater Eve Tilley.

This production has a special place in Purl’s heart. Thirty years ago her father, Raymond Purl, a graduate of Yale Drama School and an accomplished thespian, directed her in this play in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Conservatory’s production honors Ray Purl’s one hundredth birthday – a goal he missed by 26 days. Performances are still being held in his honor. And a studio at the Conservatory is being dedicated in his name.

Ray Purl had an accomplished international business career as Co-Director of Nippon Unicar in Tokyo, Japan, and as the Executive Director of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong. His life also included a parallel track on which his passion for theatre ran, ultimately resulting in his directing over 200 plays. Immediately after WWII, and before his return to corporate work, he reconnected with his parental theatre-roots and earned a Master of Fine Arts from the Yale Drama School. He directed plays for The Connecticut Players, and after moving to Tokyo, joined Tokyo International Players, where he directed scores of productions, co-starred in several, and served as president. Both he and his wife were given lifetime membership at TIP in honor of their many years of service. During the Tokyo years, Raymond also served as a consultant to the National Theatre of Japan. Upon retiring from his business career, he directed at the Diamond Head Theatre in Honolulu. After moving to Colorado Springs, his most notable enterprises included a trail-blazing production of Alan Ayckbourne’s "Intimate Exchanges", which drew the playwright’s praise and an invitation to visit his home in England. As a tribute to their Colorado home, Purl also wrote, directed and co-starred in his own play "General Palmer", performed at the Pikes Peak Center. Local audiences remember his appearances at Library events, portraying both Andrew Carnegie and General Palmer.
