Daytime Emmys - Outstanding Supporting Actor/Actress - My Top 5
By Carolyn LeVine Topol
Approaching the challenge to select my top five choices for Outstanding Supporting Actor and/or Actress was equally as daunting as the task of selecting five from the Outstanding Actor & Actress categories. However, this task was multiplied in difficulty as, having watched all four network TV soaps during the past year, I felt some actors were glaringly snubbed in the Supporting Actor/Actress categories. While it is hard to block out a performers entire body of work, and keep focused solely on the submission reels, I can only assume this is what occurred during this year’s nominee selection process.
Although I would have liked to have seen more actors and actresses nominated, each of the nominees had exciting and dramatic storylines during 2015. Since I have not been privileged to see the reels sent in by each actor, I am basing my selections on overall storylines and performances from 2015.
Without further delay, here are my selections in no particular order:

Daytime Emmys - Outstanding Lead Actor/Actress - Top 5
Daytime Emmys - Outstanding Lead Actor/Actress - My Top 5
By Carolyn LeVine Topol
I never (at least rarely) shy away from a challenge. The task at hand — select my top five choices among all the acting nominees for the 2016 Daytime Emmys. I was completely overwhelmed by this daunting decision, so I offered a compromise. Despite the quality performances by all the nominated actors, I will put myself out on a limb, and narrow the list down to my top five in the combined categories of Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress.
Since I am not privy to the actual submission, I am basing my selections on the stars’ 2015 performances.

Dr. Marlena Evans Saves the Day on 'Days of our Lives'
Days of our lives - Dr. Marlena Evans Saves the Day!
By Carolyn LeVine Topol
Tuesday’s episode of Days of our Lives brought us to a major story climax. The Salem “cavalry” is poised to save the day. The surprising twist — it includes the toughest psychiatrist imaginable, Dr. Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall). Despite objections from rescue team leaders, Rafe Hernandez and Steve Johnson (Galen Gering and Stephen Nichols), Marlena insists on participating, unable to rest until her ‘husband’, John Black (Drake Hogestyn), is safe.
Dressed all in black, not only does Marlena look incredible, but she’s ready for action. Unexpectedly showing up on the scene, Steve and Rafe reluctantly accept her participation, giving Marlena a weapon. In response to their concerns, Marlena, rightfully, insists she has been through more difficult spots than this (I would imagine far more often than both Steve & Rafe combined). As viewers can attest to, Marlena Evans has survived, and successfully worked her way out of much more challenging encounters than this during her years in Salem.
Viewers quickly get a bird’s eye view as to why savvy Marlena was needed. Before reaching their goal, Marlena first saves Steve, who is nearly taken out of action by a member of the enemy’s security team. Without missing a beat, Marlena silently and strategically cold-cocked the thug and then continued on the mission.
There is no question Marlena can hold her own in any situation. Fortunately, she was on hand to comfort and support John’s son, Paul Narita (Christopher Sean), who was rescued while in the process of being brainwashed. Having a super-hero psychiatrist on a team can come in handy.
Dr. Evans’s finest qualities are her inner strength and determination, coupled with her ability to repress her fear when necessary. Without her on the rescue team, the entire mission might very well have fallen apart.
Let’s face it — Dr. Marlena Evans can ‘kick butt” better than anyone in Salem!
Here’s one big question — why was she referred to as John’s “woman”? Marlena Evans is her own woman — one viewers can admire and respect. The reference to her as John’s woman, more than once, was enough to rattle any fan. Marlena had enough class not make an issue of it, but no hero should be referred to as someone else’s possession.
Dr. Evans has, does, and will continue to stand on her own two feet. She loves John and her family, and is fiercely loyal to her friends, but tempers these relationships with an ardent, independent persona.
No one should ever diminish Marlena Evans. The “Queen of the Night” can hold her own with anyone, in any situation. Forget Wonder Woman — Days fans have Dr. Marlena Evans!

Atlanta Fan Event- A Soap Fan’s Adventure
Atlanta Fan Event - A Soap Fan’s Adventure
By Carolyn LeVine Topol
March 19, 2016: It’s day 1 of the Star Struck Fan Events, Inc. - Atlanta event. What happens when a lifelong soap opera fan gets the chance to meet seven outstanding actors? You enjoy a high that no drug could compare with!
That’s what happened this morning. The adrenaline rush, from taking a train from Connecticut to Washington, DC, then a car, with friends, the rest of the way to Atlanta, enabled me to stay up until 3:00 am Friday morning. From the moment of our arrival, the endorphins kicked in, as did the inevitable anticipatory rush of energy.
Once the first scheduled event begans — an intimate ‘Meet & Greet’ with actors, Bryan Datillo, Judi Evans, Vincent Irizarry, Eric Martsolf, Jordi Vilasuso, Guy Wilson, and Marie Wilson — the excitement escalates. Enjoying a private moment to chat with each actor, and get an autograph, is far more gratifying than any stage door interaction I have had, fighting crowds for a quick signature, frequently coupled with an unintentional elbow in the ribs.
The novelty of soap star events allows fans to get up close and personal with individual stars, briefly converse, and get a taste of what makes a quality performer. The added bonus is learning that these are not people who shy away from fans, but embrace them, and are genuinely grateful for their support.
Judi Evans, currently Adrienne Johnson Kiriakis on Days of Our Lives, expressed it best when she acknowledged that without the dedication of the fans, there would be no shows.
Photo opportunities are one of the perks of these events. They afford time to take multiple pictures with any, or all, of the actors in a relaxed atmosphere. Conversation is encouraged, and even a little clowning around comes into play. Think about Eric Martsolf (portrays Brady Black on Days) doing a spontaneous imitation of Hannibal Lecter — entertainment comes in a variety of ways.
Now it’s time for me to get my voice ready for the biggest challenge of all (not staying awake) — switching from talking to singing — not my forte. The night ahead promises to incorporate a whole new level of celebration, as actors will be taking the stage with a select group of fans, to sing Karaoke. All attendees will be enjoying the fun of a night club atmosphere of singing, dancing, and drinking along with the actors. Having friends with me adds a special bonus!
Although I should be tired by now—running on less than ten hours sleep over the past two nights—there isn’t a moment I feel even the slightest bit exhausted. There’s something to be said about the impact of an ongoing adrenaline rush!
Having a small group, dinner environment with one of the actors, was incredible. I had the great fortune to sit with Guy Wilson. For a such a young man, he has the intelligence and elegance to carry on conversations with a variety of people, on a variety of subjects, without missing a beat. Our discussions about his future film projects and sports were my particular favorites, especially with baseball season just a pitch away.
This special dinner, for event Sponsor-level participants, ended with a rousing game of “Guess the Stars’ Favorite Song”. The winner only had three correct matches — I wish I could say it was me, but I topped out with one.
The Cocktail Party/Karaoke Night was a blast! Due to some hotel-related issues, each fan was given coupons for two free drinks, and I’m pretty sure everyone used them. With the party started, and the music cranked up, everyone danced, chatted, and drank. Judi Evans, Marie Wilson (who plays Summer), and Eric Martsolf showed us all some serious dance moves! Vincent Irizarry’s incredible singing voice impressed everyone.
In addition, every actor remained enthusiastic and engaging. They all socialized with anyone, and everyone, who strolled, or danced, their way. As the evening progressed, fans were treated to a special “father/son” Karaoke duet of “Under the Bridge” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, from Bryan Datillo and Guy Wilson (Lucas Horton and Will Horton).
As a personal added bonus, I won the final bid on a special silent auction item — soap-related, of course. I won an autograph portfolio, filled with signed photos of several All My Children stars, highlighted by Days newcomers, Jordi Vilasuso and Vincent Irizarry (Dario Hernandez and Deimos Kiriakis). It was the final highlight of a night filled with partying — and I may have even attempted a little Karaoke myself — thank goodness for liquid relaxation.
March 20, 2016: Bleary-eyed, but still raring to go, many participate in a full morning of traveling through Atlanta on a Walking Dead/Hunger Games bus tour, including site visits and anecdotes regarding both productions.
Following the bus trip, a larger group enjoyed another wonderful meal with all the actors. Each actor sat at a different table. After a relaxing lunch, the actors dispersed, completing an organized rotation of tables, enabling everyone to have one last chance to visit with, laugh with, and enjoy photo opportunities. I now have MULTIPLE pictures with every actor at the event (there’s never enough) — not to mention, an added respect for all of them. No matter how tired they may have been as the weekend progressed, Bryan, Judi, Vincent, Eric, Jordi, Guy, and Marie gave their all to make the weekend special for all attendees.
When the event, sadly, came to its end, everyone hugged, sharing special farewell moments, with the actors and friends. Promises to stay in touch were welcome words.
To insure my promises are kept, I know I will most definitely be attending more fan events in the future!

Five Characters Who NEED Storylines on 'General Hospital'
Five Characters Who NEED Storylines on General Hospital
By Carolyn LeVine Topol
Characters on soap operas cycle through their storylines. They are involved in a major drama, deal with all the fallout, and then see it to its conclusion. Some stories last longer than others and, generally, when the arc is complete, the central character(s) has a pause in his/her turmoil. However, the characters below have been off the front burner for far too long.
Laura Spencer (Genie Francis) - Veteran General Hospital actor, Genie Francis, is a strong actress who has demonstrated her ability to carry the most dramatic storylines. As Laura Spencer, there is no doubt Genie still has all the passion and moxie needed to hold her own with any curve ball thrown her character’s way. However, all we have seen recently is Laura as the supportive, advice-doling mother to Nikolas and Lulu. Laura was the woman who joined Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) and Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers) to save the world and now we see her passively venturing from Wyndemere to lunch at the Metro Court and home again. I can only hope the key bequeathed to her by Helena Cassadine (Constance Towers) unlocks an exciting new storyline for the very underutilized talent.
Felicia Scorpio (Kristina Wagner) - Felicia captured our hearts as the young woman who had to masquerade as a young boy to hide in plain sight when she first arrived in Port Charles. In a short period of time, Felicia developed from ingénue to powerful woman. Her adventures, including discovery of an Aztec treasure as well as joining Robert Scorpio and Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) in several WSB adventures, were only matched by her fierce love of her husband(s) and children. Savvy, quick-witted Felicia should be playing a more prominent role in Anna’s storyline, if not one of her own. I wouldn’t mind seeing Felicia find her way to removing the current mayor and taking her rightful office. It certainly seems surprising that, even at Robin Scorpio’s (Kimberly McCullough) wedding, Felicia was relegated to a role marginally more than a nameless guest. Please let us see self-assured, Felicia, enjoy a more active role in Port Charles.
Lucas Jones (Ryan Carnes) - Now that Dr. Patrick Drake (Jason Thompson) has moved across the country, apart from Dr. Monica Quartermaine (Leslie Charleson), Lucas is the doctor audiences are most familiar with at General Hospital. Unfortunately, we rarely get to see Lucas there, or anywhere of late. Although he was the best man at his birth father, Julian Jerome’s (William deVry), wedding, there seems to be little focus on Lucas himself. For a character who survived a difficult coming out storyline and learning his birth father is a mobster, Lucas seems to currently be leading a very uneventful life in Port Charles. Viewers know the newest doctor in the city, Griffin Munro (Matt Cohen), is a friend of Lucas’s, and fiancé, Brad Cooper (Parry Shen), is free to marry him, having gained his much-desired divorce. It would seem that between these two occurrences, coupled with his ex-mob boss father, Lucas would be involved in many active storylines. With the potential for the character of Lucas Jones, I hope we get to see much more from him soon.
Brad Cooper (Parry Shen) - Parry has created the role of complex, funny, and heartwarming lab technician, Brad Cooper. His previous antics have been central in several storylines, yet the mystery behind his in-name-only marriage, a promising plot twist, has fallen by the wayside. In fact, viewers have seen so little of Brad, it appeared he had moved away from Port Charles. Now that fans know he has succeeded in gaining his divorce, enabling him to marry fiancé, Lucas Jones, we still have been denied any consequential screen time. It would be a huge asset to reignite the Brad/Lucas (“Brucas”) storyline and allow the audience to see these two finally marry — they have been engaged longer than most real life couples, let alone those in the soap opera world.
Maxie Jones (Kirsten Storms) - Kirsten has been a familiar, and welcome, face on more than one soap opera. She has developed the character of Maxie, bringing her to the status of playful, independent, and competent young woman. As the daughter of Felicia and Frisco Jones, Maxie would certainly have more than enough energy to take on a variety of challenges in Port Charles. From the humor and excitement of her non-marriage to Spinelli to the depth of emotions Maxie displayed as she fought for custody of her daughter, Maxie has proven herself to be a person to be respected. Maxie has now earned the position of assistant to Crimson’s new editor, Nina Lansing (Michelle Stafford). Unfortunately, all viewers see Maxie doing lately is supporting family and friends in whatever drama or tragedy they are experiencing—a younger version of Laura’s apparent role these days. It’s time for Maxie to get her own storyline once again. I’ve missed her as the petite force-to-be-reckoned-with woman who is a joy to watch.

'Days of our Lives': Vivian Jovanni and Kristian Alfonso Shine as Ciara Confesses Her Rape to Hope
Vivian Jovanni and Kristian Alfonso Shine on Days of our Lives
By Carolyn LeVine Topol
The March 10, 2016 episode of Days of Our Lives was extremely emotional as viewers finally witnessed the moment when Ciara (Vivian Jovanni) told her mother, Hope Brady (Kristian Alfonso), she was raped by her step-brother, Chase (Jonathon McClendon). As a trusted member of their household, the rape of one teen by another, presumed to be more of a brother than a boyfriend, shocked DOOL fans. The truth is, many sexual assaults are committed by people known to the victim.
After being summoned to a warehouse by her distraught daughter, Hope listened in horror to Ciara as she shared the horrible secret she had been keeping, while Chase remained bound to a chair looking on. Hope’s reactions cycled from shock, to panic, to realization, to anger — all evident, not only with words, but by the expressive and emotional performance of Kristian Alfonso.
So many fans had been waiting for this moment and were given a good portion of payoff on this important and significant storyline. Once Hope finishes unleashing her anger, wrath, and disgust upon Chase, sending him off to jail, she becomes the mother Ciara now needs more than ever.
Although we did not get to see the difficult visit to the hospital, taken by mother and daughter, we learned of it, and all it entailed, in the intimacy of the Horton living room.
It was heartbreaking to listen to Ciara explain to Hope the primary reason she had not told her mother about the assault sooner. Ciara shared her feelings of self-blame. Despite the lack of surprise in this sad revelation, it was an important step. Vivian’s portrayal of the confused, hurt, and conflicted teen were truly emotional. Hope’s words of unconditional love and support were exactly what her daughter needed to hear, and believe, during the deeply meaningful and moving scene.
As a mother, I empathized with all of Hope’s inner turmoil, and admired her for not making the rape about her. She kept the focus and concern solely on Ciara and whatever she may need to move forward. Never once did Hope spew platitudes or clichés, but offered honest advice and open discussion that harmoniously blurred the lines of mother-to-daughter and woman-to-woman.
While DOOL’s audience suspected, for a few weeks, that this horrible act would go on to a point the viewers no longer felt its intensity, it was handled extremely sensitively, honestly, and in a timely manner. The poignant scenes between Hope and Ciara had many viewers, myself included, reaching for the tissues. Kudos to Days of Our Lives for handling Ciara’s rape storyline respectfully and even greater kudos to Kristian Alfonso and Vivian Jovanni for their incredibly sensitive and nuanced performances.

Rebecca Herbst Can't Be Replaced on 'General Hospital'
Rebecca Herbst Can't be Replaced on General Hospital
By Carolyn LeVine Topol
It’s no secret in the daytime soap opera world that characters get recast. It happens all the time. Some soap characters get recast so frequently viewers need a who’s who menu to keep them all straight.
However, one soap opera in particular — General Hospital — has appeared to avoid the repetitive recast disorder. Although GH is not immune to the need to recasting, very few established characters on the soap have been recast. In fact, there are many veteran actors who have maintained their roles, on General Hospital, for decades—two examples immediately come to mind — Leslie Charleston as Monica Quartermaine and Genie Francis as Laura Spencer.
Character consistency and longevity are two reasons General Hospital has stood the test of time, maintaining a large, loyal audience. Having watched the soap for several decades, I enjoy the opportunity to see these characters mature, evolve, and in some cases, literally grow up.
This is the case with the role of Elizabeth Webber. Actress, Rebecca Herbst, originated the role of Elizabeth in 1997. As the granddaughter of GH pioneer, Steve Hardy (John Beradino), and daughter of Jeff Webber (Richard Dean Anderson), there is no question of the importance of this legacy character. From the moment Rebecca assumed the role of teen Elizabeth, she made it her own. Having played Elizabeth for nearly twenty years, Rebecca allowed the GH viewers to witness her develop the character and make it her own. Fans watched as Elizabeth met with numerous challenges, including a shocking rape while still in high school, finding herself through artistic expression, falling in love, having children, and falling in love again…and again.
Herbst’s portrayal of Elizabeth, in her recent storyline of dishonesty and betrayal regarding Jason Morgan (Billy Miller), led many fans to dislike ‘sweet’ Nurse Webber. However, Rebecca’s nuanced performance, demonstrating her character’s growth and self-awareness, after the revelation, has enabled viewers to willingly forgive Elizabeth. Considering the extent of Elizabeth’s duplicitous actions, it takes a great actress to begin winning us back so soon.
Each day we move past Elizabeth’s treachery, the more she redeems herself. Throughout February, it became progressively easier to see the growth in the character. Although still far from completely forgiven, Rebecca’s ongoing nuanced performance enables fans to recall the Elizabeth we watched grow up over the years.
Elizabeth is currently involved in several storylines, and it is easy to see more on the horizon. In addition, Rebecca has on-air chemistry with several actors on GH, opening the door for potential romances for Elizabeth.
It would be nearly impossible to have any recast step into Elizabeth’s shoes with success. As with Kimberly McCullough’s ‘ownership’ of the role of Robin Scorpio, Rebecca Herbst is Elizabeth Webber.

'Hit The Floor' - Why Jude & Zero Are the New “It” Couple
Hit The Floor - Why Jude & Zero Are the New "It" Couple
By Carolyn LeVine Topol
The original series, Hit the Floor, is now in its third season. Created by James LaRosa, this innovative show, that airs on VH1, started out as a whodunit with a twist. Hit The Floor revolves around an ensemble of bold characters. All of whom are somehow associated with the fictional pro basketball team, the LA Devils, and their cheerleaders, the Devil Girls. The show started out with a quiet entrance onto the primetime scene, but due to extensive word-of-mouth praise on social media it has flourished.
In addition to a cast of characters who include ruthless, and extremely competitive team owners, players, and cheerleaders, one storyline has garnered a great deal of attention. The unexpected “It” couple on HTF, who more and more viewers tune in to see is made up of sports agent, Jude (Brent Antonello), and Devils star player, Zero (Adam Senn).
Jude, a young man looking for his ideal partner, falls for the closeted Zero. Ironically, one of their most intense sex scenes, which was groundbreaking on primetime, non-subscription, TV, took place in a closet. The message is not lost on devoted fans hoping for the pair to find happiness. Not only do Jude and Zero, known by the portmanteau “Zude”, have explosive physical chemistry, but the audience can’t miss the developing emotions they share.
James LaRosa seems to have found the formula to make the show’s expanding audience want to see this couple find comfort, passion, understanding, and most of all love. We have witnessed them go from two men finding themselves at odds with their opposing relationship goals, to two men who have found their way to loving each other openly and as honestly as possible.
There is still a way to go for this couple to find their true center. As season three progresses, Jude and Zero appear to be working in tandem to explore a lasting partnership. However, despite their progress, Zude still has many hurdles ahead. As a fan I look forward to watching them all.
The challenge for Zero, maintaining his status as a world class athlete who is out, while beginning to make peace with his childhood in foster care, is bound to throw more than one roadblock in this couple’s path. While Jude is less physically experienced, he is still the far more mature of the two. Jude’s greatest challenge will be to maintain his own integrity and sanity, while dealing with Zero’s moments of fear and denial, periodically talking him through each new obstacle. In other words, Jude is both Zero’s lover and his conscience — a huge responsibility to undertake.
The undeniable chemistry, both emotionally and physically, between Jude and Zero has enabled this couple to develop a huge following, equal to or greater than every other pairing on Hit The Floor.
I may not be part of the Devil Girls, but I’ve created my own cheer when viewing HTF — “Zude Forever, Zude Forever, Yes, Yes, Yes!” The only thing missing for this this new “It” couple is their time on screen. I would love to see them get more airtime! They have earned it and deserve it!

'The Young and the Restless' - Do Sharon & Nick Have a Chance?
The Young and the Restless - Do Sharon & Nick Have a Chance?
By Carolyn LeVine Topol
There are many couples on soap operas who are destined to be together no matter what obstacles they face. Some of these couples have demonstrated this by marrying, divorcing, reigniting the flame, and marrying each other repeatedly. The Young and the Restless is not immune to this pattern, and I, for one, am grateful.
When two young people bond, form friendships, and ultimately fall in love, especially during their teen years, it’s hard to resist routing for them. This concept goes back to feelings stirred by Romeo and Juliet — but we desire the happy ending Shakespeare didn’t afford us.
The Young and the Restless viewers will recognize the characters who make up the couple I’m eluding to — Nick Newman and Sharon Collins (Joshua Morrow and Sharon Case). These two captured our hearts as star-crossed lovers from opposite sides of the proverbial track. After finding one another, battling all odds to marry, and repeatedly facing seemingly insurmountable tragedies and obstacles, they succumbed to divorce.
Fortunately for Y&R fans, Nick and Sharon never seem to completely leave each other’s orbit. This is partially due to their need to co-parent their children, Noah and Faith (Robert Adamson and Alyvia Alyn Lind), and partly due to their undeniable attraction. The chemistry between these two actors permeates every scene they are in together. Thankfully, viewers have not had to endure any recasts for Nick or Sharon, adding to the apparent never-ending connection between the couple.
Recently, the Y&R audience has watched Sharon and Nick team up to solve the mystery of Dr. Sandy Anderson (Elizabeth Bogush). Working in tandem clearly brought the pair closer than they have been in a long time.
Even as Nick intends to proceed with a plan to adopt a child with his wife, Sage (Kelly Sullivan), we see him relying on Sharon for support. Sharon endorses Nick’s wonderful parenting skills to the prospective birth mother while inadvertently ignoring Sage’s attributes—the perfect example of a Freudian oversight.
Viewers recently got an added treat—during a terrible storm in Genoa City, Nick and Sharon were stranded in Sharon’s home and had to snuggle under blankets, in front of a roaring fire, to stay warm. Neither seemed to find this awkward, or inappropriate, until Sharon’s current husband, Dylan (Steve Burton) walked in, clearly taken aback by the intimate scene.
Recent trouble for Noah has brought Sharon and Nick even closer. The writing is not only on the wall, but a virtual billboard screaming for attention. Fans of Sharon and Nick, known by the portmanteau, “Shick”, appear destined for another go-round.
Can The Young and the Restless viewers hope Sharon and Nick will ultimately remarry? Only time will tell, but I’m counting on seeing this pair walk down the Genoa City aisle once again. Will it be the last time? That’s the million-dollar question. Sharon and Nick have many years ahead to sabotage their expected reunion. Let’s enjoy the moment, as we see these two slowly make their way back together… again.

'General Hospital' Knows How to Grab Attention
General Hospital Knows How to Grab Attention
By Carolyn LeVine Topol
Every soap opera goes through periods where some stories explode on the screen and others fizzle out long before reaching their climax. During recent weeks, on General Hospital, this theory has been taken to extremes. Two prominent stories on the GH landscape have elicited polar opposite reactions — one kept me on the edge of my seat and the other nearly replicated the impact of a tranquilizer.
This past week was the perfect example of all this soap does best… as well as some of their choices that make me want to reach for the remote and hit fast-forward.
Having enjoyed GH for nearly 45 years, I’ve been thrilled to watch many of their dynamic storylines. General Hospital’s characteristic engagement of many citizens of Port Charles weaving together in story arcs and then culminating with a nail-biting climax of all at once brings out all the best in this soap. I still remember the Ice Princess storyline of decades past—it was that exciting for its time.
This past week the excitement revolved around two events due to culminate simultaneously—the wedding of Alexis Davis & Julian Jerome (Nancy Lee Grahn & William deVry) and the arms smuggling sting on the pier. Utilizing nearly all the featured characters in Port Charles, Paul Hornsby’s (Richard Burgi) ill-conceived sting operation, culminating with a wedding hostage crisis, kept me on the edge of my seat. From gunshots fired at an innocent bystander to Sonny Corinthos’s (Maurice Benard) dramatic leap from his wheelchair to save the day, General Hospital demonstrated what it does best—especially during a sweep month.
The only strange downside to this story arc was the evident abandonment of the entire crime scene, including the military grade weapons. Although it enabled Carly (Laura Wright) and Sonny to have their moment to bond, it was awkward and glaringly inappropriate. However, I can be very forgiving for a few minutes of foolish story-telling when the rest of the story was so engaging.
While the wedding excitement and arms smuggling sting was the stuff that GH has always been known for, their writers are clearly not immune to the occasional sleeper.
Despite the portrayal by two outstanding actors, the Hayden/Nikolas (Rebecca Budig/Tyler Christopher) saga has reached a stage where I can only describe the plot as boring. For a show that lends itself to tempestuous stories, revelations by either Hayden or Nikolas could take place tomorrow and it wouldn’t faze me, having lost my interest. This arc, reminiscent of the interminable “Fluke” storyline, has reached a point where I just don’t care. For a soap with an award-winning writing team, it’s surprising when they do not sense when a story needs to be tied up as it is beginning to disinterest viewers.
I look forward to more exciting performances, coupled with creative and explosive story arcs. In addition, I must praise General Hospital for not only giving viewers an ongoing torrent of turbulent plots, but for continuing to thread romance throughout. Energetic arcs, coupled with tender moments between Julian & Alexis, Sonny & Carly, and Brad & Lucas (Parry Shen & Ryan Carnes), to name a few, illustrate why I continue to watch General Hospital after more than four decades, and will undoubtedly continue to do so for many years to come.

Romance Needs to Return to 'Days of our Lives'—For All!
Romance Needs to Return to 'Days of our Lives'- For All!
By Carolyn LeVine Topol
It was just shy of two years ago when one of the loveliest romances, in recent Days of our Lives history, culminated in a beautiful wedding at the Kiriakis mansion. I’m sure I’m not alone in fondly remembering the wedding of Sonny Kiriakis and William Horton (played by Freddie Smith and Guy Wilson). Not only was their wedding a pivotal moment in daytime TV, but it contributed to Days being recognized by the GLAAD Media Awards.
As a Days viewer for nearly four decades, I still remember Marlena (played by Deidre Hall) ending the wedding ceremony with, “May the love you share be the bond that brings you strength, and comfort, and joy all of the days of your lives.” Incorporating those particular words, I expected Will and Sonny to become one of the enduring love stories in this beloved soap opera’s history.
Instead of a long-lasting bond, which should have endured many soap-style ups and downs, the love story of Sonny and Will, so full of promise, ended tragically. In a sad mess of betrayal, followed by the slow, but evident, maturity of the characters, and expected renewal of their love, all was destroyed with the senseless murder of legacy character, William Horton. Will’s brutal death not only killed the chance for Will and Sonny to have their well-deserved happy ending, but also appears to have killed the entire gay storyline.
Currently, as I watch Days every afternoon, I await the time when the show will renew my faith in groundbreaking storytelling and continue to crush antiquated barriers to all love stories.
There is still one prominent gay character left in Salem, although he’s been conspicuously off the radar of late. It’s time for Paul Narita (played by Christopher Sean) to get the chance to find love in Salem. Having hoped to reconnect, unsuccessfully, with his former love, Sonny Kiriakis, Paul has been left adrift in a town with a preponderance of characters pairing up on an ongoing basis.
Learning John Black (Drake Hogestyn) is Paul’s father, led me to believe Paul would play an integral part in all aspects of life in Salem, as do his siblings Brady and Belle (Eric Martsolf and Martha Madison). Upon his entry into Salem, viewers fell in love with Paul, as he bravely came out to his mother and grandfather, and then cheered him on or sneered at him as he attempted to find a place back in Sonny’s life.
However, with Sonny currently working in Europe, managing a portion of his uncle’s ventures abroad, it’s time for Paul to get the same opportunity as the rest of the Salem community. As fans learned during the past few years, there is a gay population in Salem—enough to warrant having The Spot nightclub. Certainly there must be room for another gay character on the scene.
With all the love we have been promised, it would be gratifying and satisfying to see Paul reap some of the same benefits, beyond the clichéd date with the fashion photographer.
Having talented, strong actor, Christopher Sean, at the helm, Paul Narita can go in a number of directions. Paul can have both a powerful front-burner storyline AND a romance—especially one riddled with lots of dramatic complications.
It’s critical for Days of our Lives to return to that place of recognition they so deservedly achieved with their previous gay storyline. In 2016, this story should not be left off the grid. In the past DOOL has been praised for its “Love Wins” portrayal of the LGBT community. I hope this soap, formerly lauded by GLAAD, will not avoid the challenges of creating a new gay romance for all the viewers to enjoy.
If it’s all about the romance, let’s get ALL the romance that ALL the fans so richly want and deserve.

'The Young and the Restless' Got the Brass Ring with Jason Thompson
The Young and the Restless Got the Brass Ring with Jason Thompson
By Carolyn LeVine Topol
Having watched Jason Thompson in the role of Dr. Patrick Drake on ABC’s General Hospital for several years, it was satisfying to see Patrick, Robin, and Emma (played by Kimberly McCullough and Brooklyn Rae Silzer) ride off to a happily-ever-after together to complete their story arc.
Although the departure was bittersweet, knowing these three would no longer be in Port Charles, the farewell was tempered with good news for all the Jason Thompson fans. I, for one, was thrilled to learn he was about to take a giant step into a front-burner storyline on CBS’s The Young and the Restless.
Bravo to The Young and the Restless team for having the foresight to cast Jason Thompson as Billy Abbott. From the moment he appeared as hospitalized, comatose Billy, JT owned the character. In a series of scenes where Billy observes each member of his family preparing to mourn his imminent death, Jason seamlessly made us forget he had not played Billy from the character’s inception.
The familial chemistry between Jason and the Abbott family, including Billy’s young children, was instant — the recast was seamless. Even more apparent was the instant chemistry between Jason Thompson and Amelia Heinle, who plays Victoria Newman, Billy Abbott’s fiancée. Jason’s entry into the role of Billy, appears to have brought about a renewed energy and brightness in all the scenes between these two on-screen lovers.
Recasts are an ongoing, accepted practice on all soap operas. They are a natural part of the genre. Some recasts work and some do not. In this case, the recast of Billy Abbott, with actor Jason Thompson, was the perfect match of actor and role. Without missing a beat, Jason took ownership of the character as if he had been portraying Billy for years — let’s hope he does!

JJ and Gabi Bring Back Romance on 'Days of our Lives'
Bringing Back the Romance With a New Couple on Days Of Our Lives
By Carolyn LeVine Topol
Several months ago, Ken Corday, Producer of Days of Our Lives, promised a return to romance on the show. As a daily viewer, I was beginning to wonder when we would see his promise come to fruition for more than a random moment or two. With Salem’s overabundance of sadness and death permeating the town, I was concerned the romance I was hoping for had fallen through the proverbial cracks.
Fortunately, I finally found my oasis in the dessert of Days’ dark storylines, in a fresh, new couple. While I vividly remember the joy in watching teen Belle fall in love with Shawn D. Brady, I’m enjoying, equally as much, watching young adult, Gabi Hernandez (played by Camila Banus) finding a kindred spirit in newly graduated police officer, JJ Deveraux (played by Casey Moss).

Having watched The Young and the Restless for many years, one of the things I loved about it was the preponderance of female movers and shakers found in Genoa City. Along with the drama they brought to their storylines, these women illustrated the era of gender equality in every aspect of their lives.

Bravo to 'The Bold and the Beautiful': Why The Avant Family Is a Major Success

By Carolyn LeVine Topol
Bravo to CBS soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful for recognizing that the addition of a new family on the scene does not have to take away from the show’s established families. Instead the new members of the cast add fresh twists and turns to the developing storylines.
Initiated by the front-burner storyline of supermodel, Maya Avant, born Myron (played by Karla Mosley), the Avant family was gradually introduced to the B & B’s California scene. By allowing the audience to get to know the first Avant newcomer, Nicole, Maya’s sister (played by Reign Edwards), the viewer was able to gradually learn Maya had a secret related to her past.
After learning the truth of Maya’s birth gender, Nicole and Maya began to refer to more family members the two left behind. However, the Avant family’s measured entrance onto the scene, enabled them to merge alongside the well-established Forrester clan without diminishing the importance of one of the show’s primary families.
