'Revenge' Finale: Two Dead, One Back From The Dead (Spoilers)

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED THE REVENGE SEASON 3 FINALE

The third season of ABC's Revenge came to an end Sunday night, as did the lives of two main characters. First, Aiden Mathis (Barry Sloane) bit the dust with his life being snuffed out by Victoria holding a pillow over his face. In the final segment, Conrad Grayson (Henry Czerny) had been released from prison but was quickly murdered by none other than a much-alive David Clarke (James Tupper)! In the final scene, Victoria Grayson (Madeleine Stowe) was institutionalized by Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) before she could reveal (to anyone important) that Emily was really Amanda Clarke.

It was a good finale. The character of Aiden and the whole backstory between Emily and Aiden never worked for me so I was happy when Victoria took care of that with a drugged drink and one small pillow. Despite my dislike of the story and the portrayal of Aiden as "the one" for Emily, VanCamp did a fantastic job as Emily when she discovered Aiden's body, perhaps her best performance to date. One of the most appealing things about early Revenge was the flashbacks of Jack and Amanda, and rooting for them to be together again. Let's hope Season 4 gets back to that.

Meanwhile, I'm sadder to see Conrad die, although it's probably the best ending possible for the character. It would have been far-fetched for him to not be sent to prison for a very long time so why not let the character go out with a bang? Or with a knife!

I've long suspected David Clarke was alive but was starting to doubt the show would ever go there. It looks like they finally did, which sets up so many questions for what will happen next. How this is explained will probably determine the direction of Season 4 but, no matter what, Emily/Amanda is going to be dealing with some huge emotional confusion since her life has been revenge-focused for so long, and her father isn't even dead.

As for the rest of the show, does anyone really care about the Daniel-Gideon-Nolan storyline? It was an odd and boring choice for an otherwise fast-paced an interesting episode. I wouldn't be upset if the writers forget it ever happen.

All-in-all, the Revenge writers brought viewers full circle and raised the stakes even higher between Victoria and Emily and deserve major kudos.

Will Revenge return to Sunday nights this fall? We'll find out tomorrow when ABC announces its Fall 2014 schedule.
